Spring/Summer 2008

After a long winter, spring has arrived at Gilson Pond Campground.  Construction, infrastructure and roadway work in the campground by the contractors is complete and the finishing touches are being done by staff, the Student Conservation Association New Hampshire Conservation Corps (SCA NHCC) and other volunteers.  Now that all 40 campsites have been designated and developed, including the five remote sites, the campground is taking final shape and will provide a variety of experiences for campers!

Tent platforms were built and set at several of the campsites, while other campsites are designed for pop-ups and trailers.  The tent platforms lessen soil compaction and “campsite creep” and give campers the option to raise their tents and camping gear off the ground.

Completely new to Monadnock are five remote camping sites.  These sites are walk in only.  No fires will be allowed in these backcountry sites and few amenities will be provided.  The furthest of the five sites (R3) will take 30 minutes to walk-to while site R1 will only take minutes!

Work is still ongoing and construction of the bathhouse is expected to begin late summer.  Reservations are now being taken for the 2009 camping season.  Campsite reservations can be made by calling 1-877-nhparks (1-877-647-2757) or online at newhampshirestateparks.reserveamerica.com.

Please Note: The Gilson Pond Area of Monadnock State Park is partially-closed to public access during construction. Hikers may park in the lower hiker parking lot and access the Birchtoft trailhead via the road.  Unidentified construction hazards and unsigned relocation of roads and trails may be present which could create difficulties and safety concerns.
